One of the most important aspects
of learning to play the oboe is maintaining the reeds structure and overall health.
The oboe reed is made out of Arundo dona
x is a tall perennial cane. It is one of several so-called reed species. It has several common names including giant cane, elephant grass, carrizo, arundo, Spanish cane, Colorado river reed, wild cane, and giant reed.
There are two main contributors for the reeds short lifespan
1 Saliva- Acid and bacteria are responsible for the breakdown of reed fibers.
To minimize this unwanted effect it is very important to rinse the reed in clean water after playing. The use of pipe cleaners can be extremely beneficial in preserving the interior clean and promoting better oral hygiene.
2 Structural damage- To prevent damage to the overall shape and corners it is highly recommended to handle the oboe reed with extra caution. It is important to store the reed in a case when not playing.
